XP DVD Drive Reads CDR files but NOT DVD files

At the end of my rope with this issue. Have looked all over and found
no answers. My Compaq 3200 AMD Desktop computer's HP DVD400c DVD drive
reads CDR files but not DVD files.

At first I thought the drive was not reading any files until I popped
in a CDR. To my surprise they read. This happened a week ago and I'm
still trying to figure out what happened and how to correct.

I have scrubbed the registry, reinstalled Nero DVD/CDR software,
reinstalled HP Record Now, reinstalled Firmware, checked for Spyware
and Viruses, ran Disk Defragmenter, ScanDisk, Registry Mechanic,
Norton's SystemWorks. No errors or spyware was found.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any input is welcomed.

Could be defective hardware.
After all - there are two lasers - one for the CD, one for the DVD.

Perhaps you should try another drive?
