XP does not start due to missing file: '<windows root>\system32\hal.dll'

I have XP home edition and I think I have a virus but I'm
not seeing any symptoms of a virus. However today XP did
not start for me! I tried everything! I tried restoring it
back to its previous point, but it just won't work! I am
prompted with XP telling me that I am missing the
file "<windows root>\system32\hal.dll". Is that the work
of a virus??? I am sure that I did nothing and deleted
nothing! Someone please help me!!!! I have lots of stuff
on my comp! I don't want to format it!!! Is there a way I
can make my comp start again????

Any help will do ! THNX HEAPS!!!

Zackura

Cheers
