Word 2007 Appendix Numbering

F

Frogmouth

Hi - I have a created a document template for a report with appendices.
The template contains numbered headings (1., 1.1, 1.1.1, etc..) which all
seems to work OK.
My problem is that I want to include numbered appendices (A.1, A.1.1,
A.1.1.1, etc...)
In days gone past, I could use the Heading 1, Heading 2 ,etc., styles for
the headings and Heading 7, Heading 8, etc., for the appendices. It was a
simple job to renumber the sequence. This does not seem to work in 2007 and I
am not sure where to go from here.

Anyone have any ideas...

Hi,

As far as I can tell, that Knowledge Base article does not address the
issue: How to set up lower-level numbered appendix headings. For example:
A.1, A.1.1, A.1.1.1, etc.

When I tried to follow the instructions in the article, Word wants to do the
headings as follows: A.A, A.A.A, A.A.A.A, etc.

It appears that Word 2007 cannot do numbered lower-level appendix headings.
Could someone please confirm this?

Thanks,
Jean

I read Shauna’s excellent information, but I still must be doing something
wrong. Here’s what I did:

-On the Home tab, I clicked Multilevel List and then selected to modify an
existing numbered list.
-At the Modify Style dialog box, I clicked Format>Numbering. The Modify
Multilevel List dialog box is displayed.

1) To set up the top-level appendix heading, I did the following:
a) Selected Level 6 and linked it to a heading style I had created
previously.
b) Under Number style for this level, I selected A, B, C.

2) To set up the next-level appendix heading, I did the following:
a) Selected Level 7 and linked it to a heading style I had created
previously.
b) Under Number style for this level, selected A, B, C. An A appears,
after which I added a period (full stop).
c) Under Include level number from, selected Level 6. Another A
appears.
d) Selected the Restart list after checkbox and selected Level 6.
e) Under Enter formatting for number, I highlighted the second A and
then, under Number style for this level, I selected 1, 2, 3. However, the
first character of A.A was changed to a number. I was hoping to get A.1 at
the second level heading.

I'm probably missing something very obvious. Could you please let me know
what I am doing wrong?

Thanks very much,
Jean

Here's your problem. If you want 1, 2, 3 numbering, why are you choosing A,
B, C? I would advise doing step (c) to include Level 6 first, then choose
your number style, at which point you should see A.1. I strongly suspect
that the way you're doing it you may be getting the numbers in the wrong
order (at least that's the way it seems to work for me).

I suspect there's some basic misunderstanding here. The "Include level
number from" (in previous versions, this is labeled "Previous level number")
inserts the number from a previous level using the format that previous
level uses. The only exception is that, if you check "Legal style
numbering," a roman numeral (or A, B, C or any other style) will be
converted to arabic. You want to do that first so that it will be the first
part of the numbering. Then use "Number style for this level" (1, 2, 3 in
your case) to add the current level numbering after the previous level.

Suzanne,

Thanks very much for your troubleshooting. I will try out your suggestion
and let you know. (I am on UK time.)

Thanks again,

Suzanne,

You’re absolutely right. You need to 1) select the level [Include level
number from] and then 2) select a number style [Number style for this level],
if necessary.
I don’t know how I got into such a quandary but thanks for getting me out
of it!
