word 2003 cant draw wont draw?

Help! I'm going crazy! This question is either the most advanced question on
this bulletin board or the most simplest. Please assume its the former for
my sake. Right here goes, when I open word 2003 it deceptively opens without
any incident, then when I click to open a new document it opens one without
much ado. Then even when I go so far as to ask for the drawing toolbar it
allows me to do so. I even get to click on the draw item Autoshapes,
textboxes, lines you name it and the pointer changes accordingly and the
canvas layer comes on also. But for the love of ---- why wont it allow me to
draw the item rather than clicking off as though there is some mysterious
force which wont allow it - some prime directive? Its not that the document
is protected as that disables the drawing of such items so why?? what am I
missing. I have trawled the internet on this point and havent found anyone
with this problem. Its getting so I feel as though I need to join a
secretive Word 2003 'cult' somewhere based in a commune atop a mountain and
spend 20 years in meditative silence contemplating the nature of the pointer
or whether to use mail merge or not before I will be initiated into the
reason why. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It's not clear from your message exactly what's happening. I don't know what
"clicking off" means. Are you saying that the moment you try to draw
something, Word crashes, closes precipitously... or makes a clicking noise
and stops responding.

You might try the troubleshooting steps shown (a number of Word problems
share similar causes, so don't be fooled by the article title):

No word doesnt crash it just doesnt let me draw anything. It acts as though
the document were password protected, yet it isnt password protected. It
allows me to select the textbox, line I want to draw yet doesnt allow me to
do it?

Are you drawing in the canvas? If not, you probably don't need the canvas.
You can disable it on the General tab of Tools | Options.
