Windows XP Update & Maintenance

Could someone kindly let me know whether I should be
going to the Microsoft site for any updates for my
Windows XP Professional, or simply relying on the
automated update/download messages from Windows?

You should be going to the site by clicking on 'Windows Update' Doing that
gives ALL updates. The auto update only gives security or hot updates.

If you have it set to Automatically update, you are getting all you
need, the Critical Updates.

If you go to Windows Update, you may also be offered Recommended and
Driver Updates.
Install the Recommended Updates if you feel you need them.
If Driver Updates are listed, instead go to the hardware manufacturer
for them if you feel you need them.
