Windows XP Hardware Video driver updates on MS Updates website...

I've got an NEC LCD2010X monitor, and everytime I download the latest update
from MS for either the NVIDA or Matrox Video cards I always find the drivers
don't work... why ?

Latest case is with the NVIDA update - I can't go beyond 4bit 640x480....

Because you should never install drivers from Windows Update. Many MVPs
have suggested to MS that they not include drivers on Windows Update
because it invariably Ends In Tears. Needless to say, our suggestions
have not been taken. Oh well. Roll back your drivers.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The card mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if onboard video; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the
drivers.

If you have installed drivers from Windows Update, you can roll them
back:

The drivers posted to the Microsoft website are most often reduced drivers
sets, and are not meant for installation on most machines.

You should always get your driver updates from the website of the company
that built your computer, or from the manufacturer of the monitor.

Microsoft posts drivers to it's website for companies that want a minimal
driver install for their hardware. These drivers are often baseline
drivers, and are meant for installation by IT personnel.

While many manufacturers provide these drivers to Microsoft, they are seldom
if ever the best choice for installation on consumer machines.

In short, never install drivers from the MU website. Instead, always get
your driver updates from the manufacturers website.

And to add, MS update drivers have been shown to be corrupt, also the
version # given are not the same as provided by the manu.

I would think MS would remove them from their site.

Don't use the Microsoft drivers - use the manufacturer's specific drivers
from their web sites.

OK...

Draw the analogy with purchasing a car that's got a maintenance service
contract.
Occassionally the manufacturer sees that there are safety defects and
recalls the car for servicing to fix them.
On the last occassion, the chief mechanic who works for the car manufacturer
recommends that I also replace the windshield with a more recent version -
supposdily since support of problems associated with the old one will end
shortly. So I have it replaced. No sooner than I do, the windscreen wipers
fail, the motor burns out. I replace them, but it happens again and
again.....

Another mechanic at a local garage tells me that I should have left things
as they were....

Hmm.... I think as people are suggesting, Microsoft *should* stop providing
updates upon their web site unless they're originating from Microsoft - this
ongoing problem is certainly a big thumbs down for MS. (Incidentally
Rollback drivers in this case.... didn't work... dare I say.. rollback
doesn't work.)...

BTW - it's a clean XP build, baring the drivers, only MS software on the
machine.
