Windows XP hangs between login and load: press esc key begins load!

I have Windows XP / Intel P4 2.4 running on a Windows 2000 domain.
Windows XP boots and the login screen comes up fine, but in between
the login and loading windows (the taskbar appearing etc..) the system
just kind of sits there indefinitely showing the desktop wallpaper.

Once I press the Esc key, the rest of windows begins loading and runs
with no problems.

Anyone else have this issue?

what programs do you have that start up on your tool bar? have you ran any spyware programs to see what's going on? and finally, do you have alot of programs on startup?
