windows xp firewall, norton firewall and My Network Places

Markk H.

I had finally got my laptop and my desktop to share files
through My Network Places. And so I thought it would be
nice to have a firewall for protection from viruses. And
so I turned on Norton Firewall(there is a little ikon in
the lower right corner with an X through it until I
activated the firewall). I also found instructions
called "How to enable intenet cdonnection firewall (ICF)
on Windows XP" and turned that on too. Since then, I
can't use My Network Places. Spefifically, I was able to
use Frontpage in my laptop and revise pages on my web
that were located on my desktop. So where are we with
Firewalls and sharing files between computers?
Can you share files and have a firewall at the same time?
How do you set things to do this?
Or do you turn off the firewall in order to share files?
Or what?

Mark;
First of all there is no reason to have ICF and Norton Firewall
operational at the same time.
Also the basic ICF was not designed for and does not work with a home
network.
You will be able to share files after you disable ICF and properly
configure Norton Firewall.
Disable ICF.

I am running ICF and ZA (free version) at the same time, plus NAV. Seemingly
they do very well together. ZA did not stop Messenger Spam and ICF do not
have program specific control as ZA. NAV protects from virus threat. Using
Symantec security check all ports are stealth.

Was thinking on NAV update to NIS because of the promised banner stop. But
after this thread it looks like NPF (part of NIS) is useless, so upgrade
plan abandoned. I asked Symantec's tech service on the ICF-NPF matter but
they did not responded. Thank to Jupiter (and other MVP's), one can be very
well educated in this security group.
