On February 28, 2006. Windows update said I had a Windows Defender Critical
Update. The update was " Definition Update 1.13.1286.1 For Beta Windows
Defender. " I successfully updated this. But, When I check for updates,
Windows update says I still have this same Windows Defender Update. I can't
get rid of the yellow automatic update symbol in the notification area
because this Windows Defender update that was installed successfully won't go
away. Has anyone got rid of this update appearing over and over again in
Windows Update?

Microsoft has heard the feedback about the warning, I think. However--I'd
strongly encourage you to run quickscans unless you've found something, or
you are doing a baseline scan on a new machine. Quickscans mostly run in
the 1-10 minute range.

Please try the WIndows Installer cleanup tool:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Download, install, and run from the Start, all programs menu. On the list
of installed products, pick Windows Defender Signatures--you might want to
note the version number listed., select that, and hit remove.

Then try further updates--both via Help, About, check for updates, or
Windows Update, to get the current signatures in place.

Vince here again. I did install Windows Installer Cleanup utility and found
Windows defender signature 1.20.1282.6. I hit removed. I also ran the "Run
String" for Msiexec... and it worked with no error boxes. Thanks Bill
Sanderson. When I went to windows update it states that i do not have any
updates. Just curious: what happenned to the "Definition Update 1.13.1286.1
For Beta Windows Defender That i originally had a problem with? When I
removed the Windows Defender signature 1.20.1282.6 from the Windows Installer
Cleanup Utility did i knock out all future updates for Windows Defender? Any
Ideas?

Dane Here -
Once I uninstalled the defender signature or whatever it automatically said
I was running 1.13.1286.1. I thought it was odd but it seems like everything
is working great. Check what version of update you have. It might be up to
date!

Good Luck

Having had the same problem the first time I updated ! the cleanup utility
did the trick, the second update worked perfectly without any intervention
from me.
Whilst this last update like others here refused to fonction regardless of
how many times I tried. nor with the cleanup utility !
Now it doesn't download the update after the first attempt as its already on
my machine and simply won't install ? I eventually succeeded, by opening
about windows defender! clicking on "check for updates" and then on "OK" and
like magic it closed with the update installed.
Pleased to at last found a way I proceeded to update my other computer,
which I supposed would be the same only to have it update perfectly without
any problems at all ! makes one want throw a tantrum !
Why Microsoft had to mess with the beta 1 ,update system ! I can't imagine
it used to fonction a marvel !
