Windows Update doesn't install new Windows components (Windows GenuineAdvantage Validation Tools)

I'm having a problem updating Windows XP. SP2 is installed and updated
through mid-September 2005. Now Windows/Update finds that my system
needs new updating software: To use Microsoft Update, you must first
install the latest version of some Windows components.

I click on Download and Install Now. The update downloads, and then I
get the message: Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tools (KB892130) -
Updates were unable to be successfully installed.

The Windows Update Log shows error, hr=80240020 and 0x8000704dd and
0x80240020 as errors.

The MicroSoft web site indicates that error 80240020 indicates
"ionteractive user is missing" and SUS_E_NO_INTERACTIVE_USER and Dec
Error Code -2145124320.

I'm at a loss.
