Windows Mail - Cannot delete mail from deleted items

S

Suzanne

Hope this is the correct forum, did not see one specifically for Windows Mail, only Windows "Live
Mail." (What is Windows "Live Mail" anyway?)

My question is regarding my "Deleted Items" folder. From the beginning I had set my Advanced
Mail>Maintenance settings to automatically delete the contents of my "Deleted Items" folder, yet for
some reason it stopped doing this sometime back in November.

Now I find myself with over 4000 deleted e-mails in the folder, many of them which can no longer
even be viewed. Not only will they not delete upon exiting the Windows Mail program, but when
selecting the "Deleted Items" folder, right clicking and selecting "Empty Deleted Items Folder,"
again nothing will delete. The window I click on to accept deleting the files goes away, but nothing
else opens or happens.

Is there something I did which caused this, or is this an error others are having with Vista
(Premium) and Windows Mail?

Am I able to delete the Deleted Items folder without causing any further problems and then recreate
a new one? There's nothing in Maintenance I can use without removing all my mail, right? I have
tried looking this exact situation up via Windows Help as well as all the online Knowledge databases
and MS help sources. Surely I can't be the only person to have ever had this issue. (I know, "Don't
call me Shirley!" LOL)

Please let me know what can be done to fix this. No need bogging down my system or the Mail program
by holding onto 4035 old messages.

A fix as been released by M$ to resolve the problem of undeletable mails:

"Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a computer
that is running Windows Vista"

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Ignore the title, it works on other folders in addition to the Outbox.

This is probably due to interference from your antivirus program.

Download and install this fix, with Windows Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit version or
the 64-bit version, try the 32-bit version first. Certain common
antivirus programs, such as most of those from Norton or McAfee,
or a recent one from Trend, tend to cause such problems, although
seldom immediately, so if you have such a program, remember
where to find the fix - you are likely to need it again. For many other
antivirus programs, just leaving email scanning disabled is enough.

Thank you very much Steve! The fix was far less painful than the actual "digging in all the wrong
places" for an answer was, by far. Perhaps next time I will give in and let this be the first place
I seek assistance.

Running the file and then rebooting made it possible for me to actually select large blocks of
deleted items at a time, then delete them. What a blast it was to actually see that crud finally
gone. Well, as gone as it can visually be for now, right? *g* Will keep that save on hand in case it
is needed again.

Again, many thanks!

As I mentioned in my post to Steve [mac], the fix you guys posted worked exceptionally well, and I
thank you so much for that info as well as your input on the Windows "Live Mail" I dropped a small
question on.

It's just so very sad to see MS has STILL not managed to bring their Outlook/Windows Mail newsgroup
abilities into the 21st Century! Won't get into it here, but the simple "Combine and Decode" has
become a bit passé in most Usenet and/or Newsgroups, and it's only good if all the posts get picked
up. Then you're left to download and run separate programs to either decode everything, or use a
special Newsgroup program to handle it all for you. So many people wish they knew why MS never does
anything, you always see it discussed across varied topics in numerous groups. So sad ....

Will also keep the fix saved as you suggested Robert, thanks again! Hmmm, did you know there is a
recording artist with your name, vice versa? Kind of mood/thematic/electronica ... fascinating.

So, it's late -- my time for writing wandering diatribes, good time to just say a final thanks and
head out of here!

Hi Suzanne,

This will show you how to fix the stuck undeletable email message
problem:

Installing the KB941090 update will just fix the problem for now. You
must stop the cause to prevent it from happening again. Read the section
titled "FIRST" in this tutorial about antivirus and anti-spyware/adware
programs to help prevent this from happening again, then install the
KB941090 Microsoft Update in the section titled "SECOND" to fix and be
able to delete the stuck message from the problem folder.

Question on the Forum, since I haven't had time to explore it fully as yet. Is it only for x64 bit,

Have a wonderful week!

microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail is for both the 32-bit and the 64-bit
versions of Vista. There are more 32-bit users, though, and they are
less likely to know which they have.

everyone knows you can hit "from" or "to" in the Inbox or Sent Items,
respectively, and get mail in alphabetical order. But this system then orders
my mail alphabetically by subject, instead of chronologically. Alphabetically
by subject is of no help to me if I am looking at threads with someone else!

1. who came up with this?
(just kidding)

2. how to change? I've looked at Views and Configurations . . . but maybe I
missed something. How is the rest of the world getting along with this?

3. I have yet to be able to post a question without first pretending I am
responding to another post. Hitting "new" and going to "question" gets me
nowhere.

thanks, mavens.

It is possible to sort any mail folder by any of the columns, you can also
add columns by right clicking the column header row.

Do you have View By Conversation selected at view current view.

Can't help with the web interface, why not post from your Communities
account in WM?

Evidently you are talking about the terrible web interface to Microsoft
Communities. Do yourself a favor and use the fine newsgroup reader
that is part of Windows Mail. Double-click on its "Microsoft Communities"
in the left (folder) pane to get started.
