Windows Live Mail to...Windows Live Mail

I bought a laptop. It has Vista. My desktop has Vista. Both have Live Mail,
but my Laptop has no "archives". Are there storage files on my DESKTOP that
I can transfer to my LAPTOP in order to access my entire email message stores?

Am I the only one who has a laptop and wants to import mail from similar
(exact) mail programs--one to another? Did Microsoft brains ever sit back
and say..."hey, I wonder if someone would EVER buy a laptop and want to put
their old emails on their new computer.

Can you sense the frustration? I'm not a geek but I know my way around
computer systems.

Cannot find any archived messages on this. Nothing on any microsoft site.
No wonder people are learning to love to hate vista...

? Millions of people use it successfully.
You can always use webmail if you don't like POP email.

Hi,

I have the same problem. I followed the steps given earlier by SIW2, it
worked BUT the problem I have is the name of the sender for the email I want
to transfer has been replaced by a set of numbers (e.g. 00A96EF9-000000D4)
and the subject for the email has been replaced by "windows mail e-mail
message".
This means I won't know the sender and the subject unless I open the email.
With a lot of emails in my folder this is a real problem. How do I get the
emails copied with all particulars as in the old computer? Please help!!

Hi,

Thanks for your response. However, my problem is not about copying the
emails into a new folder on my desktop. It is about not copying the name or
email address that the message was sent to and the subject of the message to
the new folder so that I can see what the message was about andd to whom it
was sent. What do I have to do to get the emails appear on my new laptop in
the same way they appear on my old pc?

This won't copy the messages but if you are looking that the email messages using the form(your example 00A96EF9-000000D4.eml) this
procedure in Vista will reveal the Subject for Windows Live Mail and also Vista's Windows Mail.

Viewing A Windows Live Mail Message Subject Field in Vista's Windows Explorer

- Note: see the above article and note for step 6 that other fields in addition to 'Subject' are available (e.g. To Address, From
Address etc) when configuring 'Details' in Vista's Windows Explorer

The default location for your mail folders in:
Vista's Windows Mail is
C:\Users\<your Windows logon id>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders

Windows Live Mail(in Vista)
C:\Users\<your Windows logon id>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\<your email account name>

Hi,

Your reply is confusing to me! If I click on the windows icon at the bottom
left hand corner of my screen, and then click on "windows mail" this opens up
"local folders" from where I can open my emails (sent and received).
Now I want to copy these emails to my new laptop. What should I do? I'd
appreciate if you could explain in a layman's language a step by step process
that I need to follow.

If you see a set of numbers(your post 00A96EF9-000000D4.eml) you are either viewing in Windows Explorer which the instructions
addressed or have some other issue occurring(e.g corruption)

If you wish to export your messages in Vista's Windows Mail client use File/Export/Messages and copy to an external storage
device(e.g. jump drive or external usb hard drive), then import the messages from that storage device. Note: You will need a blank
folder on the external device. To import messages on the new machine(open Windows Mail, then File/Import/Messages)...ensure that
you are pointing to the correct location of the saved files when importing.

Optionally you can drag messages from a Windows Explorer folder or the Windows Mail interface to an external device, then drag back
into Windows Mail on the new machine.
