Windows freezes during video playback

In fact, even if i enter a directory setup to show thumbnails and try to
select a video, Windows freezes. Is there a solution to this problem short
of re-installing WindowsXP? I tried re-installing Windows Media Player,
hoping that the vid codecs would be replaced to the original ones, but that
didn't work.

This is really fustrating!

There is a download for XP in windows update relating
to video freeze during playback.Who makes the video card
or if on-board,do you have current drivers,go to mfg
web-site for xp updates. You can also go to run, type:
DXDIAG See what direct X has to say of youre computers
running properties.

Did it ever work properly? If so can you do a system restore to that time.
Have you updated your video card driver?

Yes, it worked up to a couple days ago. I can't do a system restore because
I turned that feature off from the day i installed XP. I hate the fact that
it takes up so much space.
I haven't installed any new graphics drivers recently.

Well, the vid card is a nVidia 4200. I have checked the Event Viewer, but no
errors were recorded associated to the freezing. I'll run dxdiag and see if
there are any problems.

I found the solution. I remembered I had recently changed my workgroup. i
changed it back, restarted, and now my movies are working fine again. Is
that how it's supposed to be?
