windows firewall service - necessary if using third party firewall?

Hello,
I disabled windows firewall and reinstalled Kerio 2.15.
Kerio seems to work fine, but I'm not sure if it's officially SP2
compatible or if SP2 is aware of it. I set the security
center to let me manage myself..

After running Kerio firewall, I disabled the application layer gateway
and also the windows firewall/internet connection sharing services.

But it seems that the WF/ICS service is necessary, because
I can no longer use my inhome network, network neighborhood
is empty.

Secondly, creating the network setup disk and running it on
windows 98 installed UPNP on windows 98. Why?
I've since uninstalled it..

Fine - as long as you have a reputable Firewall like Kerio and are happy
it is working, you can have the Windows one off, and Security center
told to keep quiet

What is needed is the Application layer gateway service.

UPnP is needed for some things that might get run across the connection,
notably ICS, so it gets installed.

Thanks, as I mentioned, I uninstalled UPNP from 98se and the
network is running fine. It's a mystery as to why it stopped
working in the first place. Clicking on "entire network"
gave the response that the network was not accessible.
Yet after running XP's network setup disk, it started working
again. Eyeballing the settings, ie, tcp, network adaptor
and all those other things in there did not reveal
any differences from before, yet now it worked.

On the XP side, before I read your response, I restarted the
ICS/FW service (leaving alg.exe disabled) and that seemed to
restore full network functionailty between the two machines.
ALG really necesary?
