Windows Driver Foundation - Service does not start (no WPD on XP S

Hello,

I've installed the Windows Media Format 11 Runtime to install the WPD
runtime on XP. The installation went fine, but the service won't start.

The message is:

"Could not start Windows Driver Foundation - User Mode Driver Framework on
local computer Error 31: A Device Attached to the System is not functioning"

WPDMon reports no MTP traffic at all when I plug a camera device. I have no
peripheral attached and the only driver is the MTP/PTP driver that ships with
the WM 11 runtime.

I've looked everywhere and tried all I could think of during the the past 8
hours or so, to no avail.

Does anyone knows how to solve this?
