0x80040111 and the balloon in the right lower corner said that the program
can't check for updates, although with my Laptop I cam and they both run
through the same hub (Except that the Laptop is Wireless)

Thanks for your time.

Un-install Defender and then go to Microsoft's web site to re-download
it. This should fix the modules of the Defender.

Hi smlunatick.
This didn't help even when I:
- Did an uninstall then install
- Did an uninstall, rebooted then installed
- Did an uninstall, ran regclean, rebooted then installed.

Hi William,
How to troubleshoot definition update issues for Windows Defender
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918355

This didn't help me... BUT I did go to the http://www.windowsupdate.com
page as recommended in this article and realised that there were a number of
updates (Including Windows Defender) that failed to update, but there was no
explanation as to why...
How to manually download the latest definition updates for Windows
Defender
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923159

After doing this I now get error 0x80072ee2 when trying to update...

This didn't help me..

While the trouble shooting pages didn't directly help me, I get have a
problem installing the Miscrosoft .NET framework 2.0 where the GA Notifier
wasn't installed. After I installed it and went back to
http://www.windowsupdate.com I now have these updates to download: Download
size (total): 94.8 MB
Estimated time at your connection speed: 1 hour 32 minutes

I'll let you know how I go after I install the updates...

I just tried to install the updates and they ALL failed... So I dug further
and found that my BITS are broken and going by the description, this may be
part of the problem..

I got Error code 0x80246008, so I went to the page
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/showarticle.aspx?articleid=9&ln=en&IsMu=True
and followed the instructions to turn on the "Background Intelligent Transfer
Service". When I set this to "Automatic" the status was still "Stopped" so I
manually tried to start it. I then got the error:

:Could not start the BITS on local computer

Error 1083: The executeable program that this service is configured to run
in does not implement the service.

I have recently had to do a reinstall repair due to a motherboard change.

You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or
the "0x80246008" code when you try to download updates from the
Microsoft Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site

I tried this and got the same error when I tried to manually start the

I tried both procedures and I even did it in safe mode. The only
difference was the error message
In safe mode 0x8007043c which I found out is because I was running it
in Safe mode and would have received this message even if everything was
working properly..
and 0x80070020 by other peoples problems is a Spybot Tea Timer problem,
so I disabled both resident parts of SpyBot and I still get the same error..

Hi Raymond,

You may want to contact Microsoft for support. I believe there is a
no-charge support for Windows Update issues.

Or you may want to try another Repair install then try the following
article after the repair install.

It all appears to be working now. Here is what I did.

Used the Tools > Windows Update in ie.

Update failed, so I clicked on the (X) next to the failed component
which brought up an error message.

Went to the page explaining about the error message (I don't remember
the number. I hit the "Restart Now" before I wrote the number down, sorry,
and I've been trying to find it again to no avail)

It recommended that I disable my firewall, so I did (I don't have a
software firewall, but I have enabled the firewall in my modem).

As soon as the updates were being downloaded, I re-enabled the firewall
and everything has been running good since...

Thanks again..

Regards,
Raymond
