Windows Defender Start With Windows

M

Matt

I'm running Vista Ultimate x64. Windows Defender doesn't seem to start up
with Windows when I turn my computer on. I usually go to Control Panel to
start it after Windows comes up.

I have Real-time Protection turned on and I have the "Use Windows Defender"
option ticked under Options. I also checked the Windows Defender service and
it is both Started and set the Automatic. Windows Defender is also allowed to
start under MSConfig.exe. Also, the "Windows Defender User Interface"
(MSASCui.exe) process only shows up in the Task Manager when I start Windows
Defender Manually.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hello Matt,

I use the belt-and-suspenders mode. Make a Restore Point.

As always, you should make sure that you have got a working system restore
point before you run any test, download or install a new game, application,
or software update, when you make changes to your computer.

Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
administrator.

You might try this.

Go to the main Windows Update window and click on "Installed Updates" (on
the left-hand side of the window, at the bottom), and then remove "Update for
Microsoft Windows (KB931099)" (ºnly).

Reboot. Reboot agªin.

Go back to Windows Update, and re-install the same update, by clicking on
the Check for Updates button.

Good luck

I followed the suggestions in that thread but it still doesn't work.

Also, in the Security Center, it says Windows Defender is off even after
manually starting it in the control panel. When I click "Turn on now" in the
security center a window comes up and says "Security Center is updating
definitions for Windows Defender" then after a few minutes it says "There are
no new definitions available for windows defender." And thats it. Windows
defender doesn't start.

I am having the same problem as Matt. I am running OneCareLive. Perhaps it is
taking control of Defender and shutting it down for some reason?

Perhaps OneCare should interact with users and tell them what it is doing or
why it is doing something. Then users won't keep trying to figure out what
the problem is when there isn't really a problem at all. Also, perhaps
OneCare can disable the warning that keeps popping up telling the user that
Defender is turned off.

I am having the same problem as Matt. I am NOT running OneCareLive. Any other
suggestions?
