Windows Defender New Install won't update

G

Guest

I have just installed the new version of Windows Defender, after the install
it checks for new updates and then reports back that no new updates are
available. However the status window shows the update as 1.0.0.0 created
1/25/2006 at 11:29am.

Why is this and how are the definitions downloaded as obviously there should
be newer updates?

thanks

Hello George,

It's better to be safe than sorry! Create a Restore Point.

Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
administratºr.

Download CCleaner, and remove all temporarily junk.
Also clean registry with "Issues".
Run in safe mºde.
In safe mode, some of the protective services which programs use to ensure
that they aren't removed, are not running, so they are easier to remºve.

-------------------------------------

Ccleaner - http://www.ccleaner.com
http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp

There are 3 builds available.

1.- Standard Build also includes the Yahoo Toolbar but that can be
UNcheckmarked during the installation if you so desire.

2.- Basic does NOT include the Toolbar

3.- Slim also does NOT include the Toolbar and is English only.

Note, When you install Ccleaner, UNCHECK the Yahoo toolbar option.

Note, in Options, Advanced, UNCHECK - Only delete files in Windows folders
older than 48 hours.

Note: UNCHECK in Applications, the box for Utilities.

Do a scan with all the check marks on.

Open Ccleaner and press "Windows" "Aplications" and Run Cleaner from the
menu choose 'Issues' and then press scan for issues, Repair any fºund.

Run twice Ccleaner, the same as above.

Reboot.

Then try

Look for the broom Clean up, also Tune Up..

Now verify that you have the required Microsoft Windows Update prerequisite
files. To do this, follow these steps:

a. Open Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then visit the following Microsoft
Web site:
http://www.windowsupdate.com

b. Install all prerequisite updates that are available

George--this set of symptoms may be evidence that your machine is on a
corporate network which provides Windows updates via a corporate server, and
that the administrator of that server hasn't chosen to make Windows Defender
updates available over that corporate update mechanism.

Does this fit? If it does, you should know that Windows Defender updates
within the program by AutoUpdate, or by explicitly visiting Microsoft or
Windows Update sites. If you are able to go to Windows Update, Windows
Defender definition updates should be offered. If you are restricted from
connecting to Windows Update, you can download definitions manually, by
following Engel's messages in the .signatures group.

Below is Engel's latest such message--look for the TWO updates you need to
apply sequentially to get current from the 1.0.0 status.

The difficulty with updating in this manner is that you need to keep up with
the updates fairly carefully, or you can end up with current definitions,
but an old engine version. The fix, if this should happen, is to go to a
command prompt in the Windows Defender installation folder, and type:

mpcmdrun -RemoveDefinitions -all

and hit enter.

Then use Engel's message to go from 1.0.0 forward again.
