Windows defender fails to download updates

I recently updated my machine from the anti spyware beta to Windows Defender.
I encountered the problem where Defeneder thought its definitions were out
of date. I have followed all of the instructions in the bulletin posted on
the Defender site. I even uninstalled Defender and tried to reinstall it. I
am now getting an error 0x8024402C whenever Defender tries to get an update.
How can I correct this problem?

Does AutoUpdate work on your system?

Try going to Windows Update and applying all offered critical updates.
