Windows defender error 0x800106ba vista

I have read a number of questions and replies on this...

I have Windows Vista 64 bit, all was working fine, also Mcafee loaded on my
notebook. I decided to unistall a number of programs that came with my
computer all the trial version (office, norton, netzero etc) . Somewhere in
this process I started getting the windows defender error message "windows
defender error 0x800106ba"

I have spent a number of hours on the phone with HP trying to resolve
this..no luck. I tried downloading from Microsoft web site no luck says I
already have defender on my computer via vista.

I do not know if unistalling some programs did this...I did the system
restore again no luck ( HP Recommended a recover but that deletes all my
files etc) ....or maybe when I upgraded my mcafee software. Does anyone know
how to get defender to work ...I have no idea how to turn this on manual what
commands or how. Does someone have some simple steps I can go through and
resolve this issues. Thanks You.

Dave M,

Thanks, based on what you told me I have 2 things I should do, one evern
though I did used the vista program to do the uninstall I should also
download the Norton (from their web site) the uninstall tool

Second, looks like when I upgraded my McAfee software the conflict with
defender started. Sounds like with 2009 I do not need the defender but need
to do some admin things to get the error message to stop showing up.

Thanks hope all this works.

Check out this McAfee Document:

Also, you could be getting some conflict from that previous Norton if your
installed AV is now McAfee: I'd use the Norton Removal Tool after a
Windows Add/Remove, if you haven't already just as a generally good
practice unless you're still using another Symantec product. You should
only have one AV installed and Norton leaves many traces of itself behind:
