When installing windows defender on windows 2000 pro sp4 i get the following
error message
"This Software requires GDI+. Please load the Windows 2000 Security Software
PreRequisite Pack"
And as a result windows defender will not load
I have installed all windows updates including GDI+ but continue to get same
error
Any suggests as to why it won't install??

Teh solution is do download gdiplus.dll and manually place it in the
windows\system32 directory- It only took us 45 minutes to figure it out-
Thanks microsoft for breaking a perfectly good product!

Andy - any solution for 1920 error? Pops up when installing services and
stops installation.

Sorry, didn't know you can type here...O.K., I got the same issue, and I'm
running Windows 2000 sp4, the gdi+ thing...when you say manually place in the
windows\system32 directory, do you mean to open the file and drag it there??
Many apologies, I'm kinda new here...

Hmm - you are saying that you followed the instructions in this KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915052

and that didn't allow you to complete the install?

GDIPlus.DLL must be placed in the %windir%\system32 folder--which may be
\winnt\system32 on most Windows 2000 systems.

So--what happened when you went to Windows Update, did an express scan, and
applied all offered updates?

Thanks Bill - not quite sure what updates they were but I allowed Windows to
check system for updates installed them and went back and tried to install
Windows Defender and it installed with no errors.

OK not sure what happened but I responded and it didn't post - I allowed
Windows update to check my system for updates and I installed the results. I
went back and installed Windows Defender and it installed with no errors. -
Thanks

Glad that worked--one possibility is the Windows Installer 3.1--but there
are others--it differs between machines, but the common denominator is to
grab all critical updates.

It might be better to start from scratch, since I doubt that you are
installing on Windows 2000?

My recommendation would be to apply all offered updates on an Express run of
Windows Update--and repeat that operation until nothing more is
offered--then re-try.

However--maybe better to start from scratch: What OS, and why are you
attempting to install Windows Defender at this point? What antiv-virus
protection are you using, or intending to use?

For NNTP-based observers, I'll point out that the recent post to this
ancient thread came from the HTML side, which is replicating properly to
NNTP, but the reverse is not true--so I repeated the response on the HTML
side, hence the apparent duplicate.

I probably should have investigated further before making the response, but
is is actually quicker to make the response in NNTP, and then cut and paste
it into the HTML interface if needed later.

OS = Operating System

What version of Windows Defender are you actually trying to install on
Windows 2000, you are replying to an old thread that is is discussing the
Beta2 release of Windows Defender. Unlike the beta versions of Windows
Defender, Windows Defender does not run on Windows 2000 by default.

See...Windows Defender: System Requirements
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/sysreq.mspx

The System Requirements defines the Operating System(s) required to install
Windows Defender, notice that Windows 2000 SP4 is not listed as an OS in the
System Requirements because it is no longer supported.

See..."Windows Defender no longer supports Windows 2000 as mainstream
support ended in June 2005."
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displaylang=en

If you are actually trying to install the old Beta2 version of Windows
Defender on your Windows 2000 machine, then it can be done with some
manipulation of Windows Installer file(.msi)...removing the OS version check
from the .msi file should get it to install. See the following
discussion(comments by "Dosfreak") on how you would need to manipulate the
Installer file:

http://www.compatdb.org/support/topics/175747_windows_defender_windows_2000.html

Good luck,

Because posts made via NNTP are not being shown on the HTML forums, I'm going
to copy Donald Anadell's excellent response for you:

As he says ( see below) the released Windows Defender product is no longer
supported on Windows 2000.

My own feeling is that you'll be fine sticking with McAfee--just be sure to
keep subscribed for updates.
