Windows Could Not Start..missing or corrupt...\windows\system32\config\system.

Hi everyone

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me with this one.

I have a friends PC that will not boot.

It fires up and says;

Windows could not boot becuase the following file is missing or corupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

I can boot from the XP CD and gone into Recovery Console in order to
try and recover. However once there I don't seem to be able to do very
much.

If I try and do a 'DIR' command I get the following message;

There is no floppy or CD in the drive.

If I try and make tempory folder using 'MD' I get the following
message;

Access denied.

This machine has a Maxtor Sata disk drive in it (which must be working
as it at least starts to try and boot windows) However......could it
be that I need to install a driver for windows to use the SATA drive ?

Thanks
