Windows cannot access the file gpt.ini the system cannot find the file specified

I have a problem applying group policy's with our AD.

We have 2 windows 2000 standard DC's and a Windows 2003
Standard/Exchange 2003 Exchange server.

When upgrading to Windows 2003 we updated the AD schema and everything
on the domain is working happily.

DNS and WINS are working without problem and the clients can brwose to
the DC's FQDN/sysvol share.

The problem is that when I create a Group policy it populates the
Sysvol folder but it doesn't create a GPT.ini for the group policy,
therefore it is not applied at the client..

All of our clients are running XP some with SP1 some with SP2 all with
Windows firewall turned off.

Any help would be much apriciated as this is very frustrating. Please
see Error from Client end.

Windows cannot access the file gpt.ini for GPO
CN={31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9},CN=Policies,CN=System,DC=***,DC=***,DC=co,DC=uk.
The file must be present at the location
<\\FQDN\sysvol\FQDN\Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\gpt.ini>.
(The system cannot find the file specified. ). Group Policy processing
aborted.

Many Thanks
Chris

You have verified on the server that gpt.ini is not present there ? Are
there also Machine and Users folders ? Waht are permissions on your sysvol
share ?

In addition to Matjaz's post, you mention that you can browse to the SYSVOL
share. Are you referring to getting here via a specific DC through NetHood,
or can you indeed hit the share via a Dfs referral -
\\domain-name.com\sysvol and/ or \\domain-name\sysvol.

Either way, you can right-click in the resultant Window, choose properties
and Dfs.

If you can do this then that's fine -just go with Matjaz's suggestions. If
you can't, you may have a Dfs and/ or DNS issue.

Have you actually ruled out DNS?

Does netdiag /test:dns work.

What about performing the following:

nslookup
set type=srv
_ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.domain-name.com

Thanks for your suggestions guys
I can browse to the \\domain.com\sysvol and I can right click
properties and choose the DFS tab no problem.

When I look at the group policy ID it is refering to I can see the
user and machine folders and I can see the files within them.

The only issue is it doesn't seem to create a gpt.ini when I create a
group policy.

Hope you guys understand this reply.

Many Thanks

Hmmm...that's strange. Are you seeing any errors with this? Have you tried
resetting the permissions on the GPO folder tree?

Sorry for the delay.
