Windows 2k refuses to let me do anything - log in errors, stop errors

Today, scan disk ran. Not sure what it did, but when it was finished, it took 5 minutes to get through the "windows loading" and then "preparing network connctions" section. When it was done, it stopped at a login prompt (I never get login prompts), and whatever i told it as a password, it took about 90 seconds and gave me an error that said "Cannot log you on right now because the domain is not available"

I tried opening it up in safe mode, but each safe mode gave me a stop error.
Safe mode Stop 0x00000050 (various numbers) Page fault in non paged areas
Safe mode with networking or with command prompt Stop 0x0000001e (various numbers) Page fault in non paged areas.

No start up option will let me do anything. I can't disable anything, I can't reinstall the OS or any drivers, because i can never get control over the computer. There are several possible solutions to the stop errors (for instance, i do use a roxio product (or at least have it installed, and could happily delete it), which is one of about a dozen listed reasons for that particular error. But i can't get to a point to control such options.

Naturally, technical support was useless, because MS does not stand behind anything it makes and wanted $245 for the honor of telling me why their OS has failed. I now understand why people hate them so much, I had assumed it was just pettiness.

Anyway, if anyone has any ideas how to break this impasse, I'd really appreciate it.

Any help would be appreciated.

You can turn off any service by booting the machine with your Win2000 CD,
selecting "Repair" when prompted, selecting "Command Console", then typing
"help" for a list of available commands.

I suspect your problem arose because of some incompatible software you may
have loaded before. The question now arises whether Microsoft should foot
the bill for fixing it, or the supplier of that software, or you, the end
user. You will probably know the answer by the time you have disabled the
rogue driver.

I and a friend spent 6 hours last night trying to figure
out what was going on.

The win 2000 CD was not being recognized, there were no
options to utilize the disk. We had to adjust bios
settings to allow the computer to read it. We had to move
the hard drive off the 100 to the 33 connection to let
the windows CD boot see the hard drive, for some reason
the cd boot wouldn't look for the 100 slot.

There were no rogue drivers to disable. We had to
reinstall win2K, the repair left us with the exact same
problem. There are still broken .dll files that I'm having
to replace manually. Virus scans are not finding anything.

So to answer your question, it appears to me that the
scandisk broke a whole bunch of .dll files. Nothing had
been recently installed, or downloaded. The last program
install was over a month ago. The last driver update was
over 3 months ago. So yes, I still think MS was
responsible for giving free technical support for their
defective OS's. I think they could have saved us many
hours by identifying the errors and why we couldn't get
the hard drive recognized from the cd boot.

Just to finish this off ... I had a last broken .dll error in GDI32.dll. Tried a whole bunch of ways to replace the DLL, but none of them would kill the entry point error I kept getting. Someone mentioned that the file is called by Direct X, and reinstalling directX fixed the error. I think everything is functional now.

What exactly broke or replaced that dll?
