windows 20000 windows defender requires GDI+

when attempting to install windows defender on windows 2000 professional sp4
with all latest security updates installed, including internet explorer 6 sp2
and office 2003, I get the error message "this software requires GDI+ please
load the windows 2000 security software prerequisite pack". i cannot find
this pack on my computer, the windows 2000 CD or anywhere on the microsoft
website. A google search provides one hit to a tech site where they promise a
solution if you give them a credit card number! Does anyone know how to
install windows defender on windows 2000?

THANKS, that works fine, why did my search of microsoft, windows 2000 and
windows defender not turn that up and why doesnt windows defender
installation automatically download that file first, like other microsoft
products do?

If you have the correct file version (see the details I posted, or the
source information that is in this thread, as well as my posts)--and have
copied it to the correct location, I don't have a good explanation.

It would be interesting to see a listing of all the gdiplus.dll files on
your system with paths--perhaps there is a different version on the search
path reached first--I know there are multiple versions of this file.

I saved the downloaded file, it is a zip file, I unzipped it to that
location, there are three files, the dll file, a licence and another text
file, I copied all three files to C:\winnt\system32 on one machine, our other
2 windows 2000 machines didnt have a winnt folder so I copied them to
c:\windows\system32. On all three machines I was able to install windows
defender no problems. I think you must copy all three files not just the
gdi.dll file as without the license file it wont work.

I've done it both ways--I don't believe the other files are needed, but they
shouldn't hurt either. There's actually a school of thought that sees
placing this file in System32 as introducing a security vulnerability--but
I've never delved deep enough into the reasoning of that school to worry
about it.

Hi, this seems to be the forum thread closest to my problem. I have done all
of the above steps that were mentioned in this forum thread. Copied the new
GDI+ files, gdiplus.dll, licence etc to the %systemroot%/system32 directory.
Windows Defender installs beutifully, however it does not run beutifully. It
simply will not start at all, throwing back at me some error message that
"the user account has no reference to the security-ID"... ehhhm, any
suggestions? ayone?...

Bill, in respect to your question if Defender is finding an incorrect
gdiplus.dll in a different location than %systemroot%\system32. If one is
running Win2k with SP4 and all updates available installed, there will be two
other instances of gdiplus.dll on the system,
%systemroot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\gdiplus.dll (1607kb)
%systemroot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\gdiplus.dll (1600kb)

I also have no idea if this file is hit before the gdiplus.dll in
%systemroot%\sytem32
