Windows 2000 update hangs at 0%

On a fresh install of Windows 2000, when attepting an update, via
windowsupdate.microsoft.com, I choose the update feature, it starts to scan
and sits on 0%. Task list shows that IE6 is not responding, and I have to
close it. Have tried all of the remedies of deleting temp files, deleting
all found the V4 folder, deleting all copies of WUTemp, running msconfig,
running regsvr32 iuctl.dll /u and so on and so on. This is the third
computer at my site that hangs at this point.

Moe Stern wrote a similar message (see below) on 8/22/04 as follows...but no
one replied to him. On one unit, I even tried manually downloading some of
the updates thinking this might correct the problem, but to no effect.
Welcome any suggestions.

++++++++++++++++

I am having is that I go the windowsupdate.microsoft.com
website, choose the update features and it starts to scan and sits on
0% and does not go any further even if I let it sit for a hour. I have
Win2K SP4 with updates, NAV 2001 and ZoneAlarm. I have scanned the
system for viruses with nothing found, ran Spybot and AdAware and
nothing was found there either. I can go to the Office Update site and
that runs as it is supposed to. I am curious if this is a side effect
of scumware or a virus or MS just being stupid. Please let me know if
you need more info.

Well Raymond, a day has gone by and nobody has responded to you
either. Personally, I have no use for updates, but that's another story.
Microsoft help in Win2K advises against the use of the Admin account
online, but also advises that some programs do not install properly if
an Admin account is not used. So I would recommend that you download
the updates you think you need, rather than asking MS, downloading
them using a User or PowerUser account and install them one at a time
offline using an Admin account. Disable any anti-virus programs and backup
your system files before you install each update, reboot the machine, and
test it before continuing.

You also should have a firewall running all the time you are online and
up-to-date anti virus scanning software to check that the firewall is in
fact protecting you. Run the AV offline using an Admin account.

Hope this helps,
Alan

Thanks Alan. Yep, many times I can get quick and varied responses in MS
newsgroups, guess this one is a little slow, or the problems are widely
varied. Lazy me had hoped to go beyond the manual route, but guess I'll
have to resort to that. The bulldog in me still wants to know why the
automatic detection doesn't work. My experience is that many times a
problem left unsolved today, even if you have a workaround, somehow comes
back another day, maybe in another form. But, again, thanks.
Raymond
