Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) breaks Windows Installer? Help!

F

Fraser Moore

After installing Win2K SP4, Windows Installer stopped working. When
trying to install an msi file, it said:

"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. [...]"

In the event log, MsiInstaller reported:

"Failed to connect to server. Error: 0x80010105"

Can anyone tell me if this is a known problem, and how I might fix it?

Many thanks!

I don't have an answer but just the same problem.
Installer was working fine on SP3 but isn't working on SP4.
I've combed the Knowledge base and can find nothing.
I'm just adding my plea to yours.

Try going through this list to see if any of them work. I wouldn't eliminate any of these articles
just because the OS, Service Pack or Product aren't what you're using.

This is the result of a search for exact phrase "Windows Installer Service could not be accessed"

I also experience problems. Ik keep getting the "Installer was
interrupted.." error.
Below is the log file of msiexec. I hope someone from Microsoft can
analyze it and give some clue.

I was searching around for possible known issues with SP4 before we
install it and found this MS article about there being two new user
rights introduced by SP4:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=821546

I'd be interested to find out if this is what breaks Windows Installer
and if so, if it's easily fixed.

Anyway, if you figure it out, please post the answer since we may end
up with the same problem. :)

Thanks!
