Window Defender

i just read the blog on http://blogs.technet.com/antimalware/ and found
something very interesting:

"As part of this engineering milestone, we've also started to prime the
Windows Update software distribution channels with signatures for Windows
Defender. This is important so the signatures are available when we ship the
next beta. So, for enterprise and corporate customers that are using Windows
Server Update Services, you will start seeing "Windows Defender" in the
product category dialog as well as a new classification called "Definition
Updates"

does that mean that I need to have Administrative privelege to update
definition signatures. i don't get it at all, as far as i know limited
account can't use Window Update. I wish that Window Defender support LIMITED
ACCOUNT on WINDOW XP. hopefully they didn't forget LIMITED ACCOUNT features
on XP.

I believe that AutoUpdate will prompt for RunAs credentials to allow
updating by a limited user who knows the administrator credentials.

It's been awhile since I observed this, but I do have a client office that
runs as limited users.

If its utilizing Windows Update, I can guarantee it will download updates
under any account priviledge, since Windows Update already does this. But
you might be required to install the updates with Administrative
priviledges. I hope this is resolved by considering Windows Defender trusted
software so installation of definition updates takes without requiring
Administrative priviledges. It will also run as a System Service so there
shouldn't be too much problem there in scheduling the updates.

If security is a concern, there will be lots of clear reasons to upgrade to
Vista.

It does seem like it's taking a LOT from Mac OSX. I say that as someone
who's gone from windows 98 to mac osx and now windows xp )

I don't think this is a matter of copy-cat, so much as a leapfrog game--the
development cycle is pretty long--I think both companies have been working
on similar stuff for a good while--but I'll admit to not being close enough
to the process to really say a whole lot that means much!
