When opening Windows, error msg 0x800106ba Windows Defender failed to
initialize. I am using Vista OS. Is there a Windows Defender troubleshooter
anywhere that I can run?

If you are not running Windows Defender, or an anti-malware suite from
another vendor--Symantec/Norton, for example, then please do this:

Start, programs, accessories,

Right-click the icon for "command prompt" and choose run as administrator.

In the command prompt window type:

sfc /scannow

and hit enter.

This should correct the error.

Hmm--let's recap and see if I have this right.

You are getting the subject error message on Windows Vista?

You don’t have OneCare or an anti-malware suite from Symantec/Norton
installe?

(What antivirus are you running?)

You've run the SFC scan and it completed without finding issues.

Reboot?

And--the problem is still there?

Do you have the details of the file that was corrupt? In some cases,
replacing that file from another machine might be worth trying.

You might be better served by calling 1-866-pcsafety and talking directly
to Microsoft PSS staff. This is a free call if you are in the U.S. or
Canada, and have a problem with viruses, spyware, or problems installing
security updates.

This issue should qualify for that free support.

You are replying to a thread which you did not start.

Are you certain that your problem is the same as the one discussed here in
all respects?

What version of Windows are you running, and what antivirus is installed?

We do try to give accurate advice, but it isn't always safe to generalize
from advice given to someone else whose details may differ in some way that
is significant.

It's generally better to start your own set of message by posting a new
message, describing what is happening on your system, and what you have
tried already to fix it.

I gather, from your response, that you are seeing this error message from
Windows Defender, perhaps on every startup of the computer? To help, we
need to know what version of Windows, and what antivirus is involved. There
are multiple causes of this particular error--the most frequent of which is
an antivirus product which attempts to disable Windows Defender, but doesn't
do this properly, hence the error message.
