Win xp not recognising 56k v90 modem

Hi, everyone. I hope someone out there can help me out and, as I'm not
very good with computers, give me an idiots guide, so to speak! Here's the
problem:

I recently gave my old laptop to my parents to get online using dial up. I
contacted their current ISP (the laptops a second machine) and set up the
correct username and password etc. I then clicked on connect but got a
message telling me that no modem was detected or there may be a hardware
problem and advising me to check all the connections. I did that and
everything was fine. I then tried to reinstall the modem and chose from a
small list a generic 56k modem but it still wouldnt connect.

Here's the system:

Win XP Home Edition
56k v90 modem

I looked through the modem settings but could not see what the problem was
(not surprising given my lack of knowledge, I suppose!) so I can only think
that I will need to try and reinstall the modem this weekend using the XP
disk and hope it sets it all up for me correctly.

Sorry about the lack of technical info but hopefully someone will know how
to advise me to get the modem back up and running.

Thank you

Max

You will need to visit the laptop manufacturer website and download XP
drivers for the modem.. if for some reason, the driver is not available, a
PCMCIA modem could be used in the laptop's PCMCIA slot..

Hi, Mike. Thanks for the info. Not sure if the manufacturer is still
around as it was a German company supplying the UK and I think they may have
gone. However, the idea about a PCMCIA card is something I hadn't thought
of. As another thought to solve my problem I did actually spot an external
usb v92 modem at PC World going for £19.99 so I guess, at worst that would
solve the problem and give my parents a slightly better speed advantage over
v90 assuming they don't mind a plug in box?

Thanks

Max
