have you tried to acces the last known good configuration?
Press f8 during the startup screen to access the advanced
startup options.

Do you know what the file system type is on the partition
that contains the winnt dir?

I haven't tried to access the last know good
configuration because I'm not sure what that will
affect. If it will return to just before the changes I
made, that would be great. But if it returns to earlier
point it could be a problem, since this is a colleague's
laptop. Do you think that this is a safe option to
pursue?

In answer to your second question, I don't have a clue
what the files system type is, but I would be surprised
if it was anyhting other that what came with the machine
(Dell Latitude, intel P4).

Thanks for your suggestions. ...Joe

Well, I went ahead an tried it, bit it didn't solve the
problem. I still can't log on. Any other ideas?

You will need to login to the laptop as a local administrator of the laptop. You removed the domain connectivity (which also dropped any aexisting domain logins) If you are lucky the local administrator is administrator with a blank password. You need to select the local computer name in the domain drop-down list. Any accounts you create on the XP box are not used for logging in to the laptop. They are only used when directly accessing resources on the XP box.

Thanks! I was able to log on that way. But I'm not sure
what I need to do to get back to where I was, without
creating new problems. Have I lost the other user
logins? (The user account files appear to still be in the
directory structure, but the user accounts don't show up
in the accounts list.) Any suggestions?

The other logins were never on the laptop to start with. It only kept cached
copies for off-line use. The cached profiles are still there but are useless
unless the laptop is re-joined to the domain. If it is a W2K domain, you can
login with user@<domain name> (where domian name is the fqdn, not the
netbios domain.

To get back to where it was it needs to be connected to old domain and
rejoined.

Sorry, a bit more to add.
You didn't need to remove the computer from the domain to share resources.
Just identical accounts on both pc's. They can be readily accesed via the
ip address or netbios names. Workgroup names are purely for organising the
computers in logical groups.

Thank you very much for your help. I was able to get
things back the way they were using your suggestions.
Best wishes, and have a great day. ...Joe
