Why not to do a Vista upgrade - Can't find Nic

I wonder why Vista doesn't see the NIC in my machine?

I tried a Netgear FA 312 and fast Ethernet10/100 NC100 which worl in
XP and Small Business Server.

I would try to contact Netgear and see if they are working on Vista drivers.
Also if you can connect to the internet on Vista via wireless or another NIC
in the same machine, try running Windows Update and seeing if there is a
driver update for your NIC.

Why?

There are 2 cards that I tried - Linksys and Netgear. the drivers
worked in W2K and XP.

One point that you missed is Vista doesn't take the core XP drivers
and use them if needed.

Vista will not be ready for users to upgrade unless the core drivers
are included in the OS.

If you ran the Vista Upgrade Advisor it probably would have given you the
error that it doesn't recognize your NIC card, that what it said for me. It
then says to go to Windows Update after installation to get the proper
drives, which is utterly assinine as you can't get to Windows Update if you
don't have a live connection! Based on other comments in this community there
seems to be way too many Network Adapters without drivers and Vista has no
default generic driver in this release.

Drivers are the responsibility of the hardware manufacturers.
If your drivers are not included in Vista it is because the NIC
manufacturers have not provided them to Microsoft.
There is nothing Microsoft can do until the manufacturer provides the
drivers.
At this late date it is unlikely drivers will be added to Vista.

It is not relevant if they work in Windows XP, Windows 2000 or any other
operating system.

Have you asked the NIC manufacturer if Vista drivers will be provided for
those models?
The older hardware is, the less likely the manufacturer will invest
resources to make new drivers.
