Why is DOS-based RAR-packing and backing up to FDD slow in W2Kpro?

Under Win98SE: ca. 11 seconds to convert a 1334 Kb RTF document into a
self-extracting DOS-based RAR file [v2.0] and backing it up to a FDD.

[smartdrive.exe enabled; read cache for FDD - no write cache or buffering
for FDD]

Under Win2000 Pro: 55+ seconds to convert the same document (plus some secs
to add recovery data etc.).

Any ideas as to why the slowdown in W2K?

Also RAR has a windows based version that should work better for you.

Possibly because Win2000 does not execute DOS code efficiently.
