Why does a drawing canvas appear when I insert a text box?

Why does a "create your drawing here" box appear each time I insert a text
box? The appearance of this box means that I must reposition each text box
after I insert it.

In Tools > Options > General, uncheck "Automatically create drawing canvas
when inserting Autoshapes". (As far as Word is concerned, a text box is one
type of Autoshape.)
