Why do my games keep crashing?? Installation error message also?!?

M

mike

Hey, I'm new to these forums and would really like some
help :D =). I just got my computer reformatted and after
we reformatted he installed (we upgraded from Windows ME)
Windows XP Home Edition. Anyways I get the computer back,
we pay him some good money for it and everything seems to
work fine. That is until I started installing a few of my
games that I like playing. I would start installing my
games, and in the middle of the installation, it would
bring up an installation error message that reads like
this:

An I\O error occured while installing a file. This is
normally caused by bad installation media or a corrupt
installation file.
(it then has 2 buttons at bottom).
Abort (and) Retry

When I click retry it tries to install the files again,
but it gives me same error. When I click abort, it gives
me a message like this:

Corrupt Installation File!

The first guy I talked to said this was because maybe the
CDs are old or are scratched up or something, but I dont
think this is the case because they install perfectly on
my bros computer and they look in almost perfect
condition.
Some specifics on the error message: It pops up randomly
during installation of games. Could be right away, or
when I'm nearly done.

It did let me install a few games. I installed Warcraft
III and Warcraft III Frozen Throne without difficulty.
BUT! when I go to play the game, it brings it up just
like it is loading up the game to bring me to the main
menu. It would appear that way, until my game crashes and
gives me absolutely no error message. It's like I hit alt
+ F4 and closed it myself.

Specs on my computer:
AMD Athlon XP 1700+
768 MB DDR RAM
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4600 128 MB vid card
Avance AC97 Audio

Hmmm not sure what other specs you might need, anyways
tell me if you need any more. I hope you can help!!

Thanks in advance

Hi Mike,

Your CD Drive may need to be cleaned. It's possible that
it either picked up some dust from the shop, or all the moving
around dislodged some dust that was already in the drive.

Of course, another possibility is that the drive isn't properly
installed. Swap the HD and CD cables (if they have their own)
to both eliminate the cable as being at fault, as well as allowing
you to reseat the cables in case they were not firmly in place.

You could also uninstall the CD Rom drive from Device manager,
and reinstall it using the latest drivers from the manufacturers site.

Hope this helps you Mike. Please keep us posted! :)

Hey, Jimmy, question, a very stupid question, but how
would I go about cleaning my CD drive? Also in the back,
what I saw was 4 wires connected to an adapter which from
there went into the CD drive, master slave I think is
what it said on the thing, and I saw another 4 wire thing
that goes into the back of the CD drive. I believe this
is what gives it power cause it was coming from the power
supply. But about the first wire I mentioned, in the
thing that connects to the CD drive was this thing that
had room for 4 wires. I only saw 3 wires plugged into the
back of the adapter thing. A red wire, I assume a missing
wire in the 2nd spot, a black wire, and a white wire.
These were all plugged into the back of the adapter which
goes into the CD drive.

The red, black, and white wires were then wired down to
the motherboard I believe. It was plugged into the
motherboard I THINK ;). I checked both ends of these and
they seemed to be firmly in place. So now I'm all
together confused. The master slave seemed to be in place
firmly.

So my new questions -
How do I clean my CD drive?
Also how would I uninstall my CD drive if I cannot
install it again? (Can't install a CD without a CD
drive ;))

Hi Mike,

CD Player Cleaning kits sell at most computer shops.
Download the CD driver from the manufacturers web
site before uninstalling it, that way you can point to the
driver which you'll have saved on your Hard Drive. :)

Hi Mike,

The description was fine. I didn't elaborate more however
since I would feel horrible if something tragic happened while
you were working in an unfamiliar area. Best leave those alone. ;-)

Glad to be of service! :)

| CD Player Cleaning kits sell at most computer shops.
| Download the CD driver from the manufacturers web
| site before uninstalling it, that way you can point to the
| driver which you'll have saved on your Hard Drive.

|
| |
| |
(Can't install a CD without a CD
| | drive ;))
