Why am I receiving word attachments as .dat files?

I am running Office 2007 in Vista.

Occaisionally senders tell me they are sendin a word document. When it
arrives it has a .dat suffix. Upon opening the content is corrupted.

How can I make sure I receive and open the document as sent?
