White backgrounds behind my desktop icon images

Not behind the text, rather the image (i.e. behind the blue 'e' for internet
explorer)

This is kinda bugging me, and I just updated everything and restarted after
flushing spyware out of my computer, and now my desktop icon, sound icon, my
computer icon, my documents icon, windows media player icon, etc. have a
white background. Help?

What is your Color Quality setting?
Highest (32 bit) or Medium (16 bit) ?
Check via Control Panel/Display/Settings
Also have you installed PowerToys Tweak UI for XP SP1?

There are often leftovers from malware. Try:

Go to the Display applet in Control Panel and look on the Desktop tab.
Click on Customize Desktop, and then click on the Web tab. You will see
that there are checkmarks next to "My Current Home Page" and probably
"Lock Desktop Items". Uncheck these. If a malware file has been left
behind that is causing the issue, by highlighting the "My Current Home
Page" and clicking on the Properties button, you will be able to
determine the name of the file. It might be called something like
"security.html" or the like.

Click Apply and OK out when you've made your changes. Then you want to
find the *.html malware file and delete it.

If you can't enable desktop backgrounds after a virus, MVP Kelly Theriot
has a fix. Look under Wallpaper-Desktop-Disable Changing here:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_w.htm

If Display tabs are missing, run Kelly's registry edit on line 285,
right-hand side "Restore all display tabs".

I have a wallpaper, but what you said did not work. It's the icon's
themselves that are white, not the background to them.

Then I'm sorry, but I don't know. Update your video card drivers
perhaps? Have a third-party theming program installed?

Hmm, I'll probably just install windows, while keeping a backup of the
security patches on a CD.
