which antivirus would you use?

My employer offers Symantec Corporate Edition 9.0 for us to use at home.
Live updates must be done manually, but that doesn't bother me since I
don't like automatic updates robbing resources anyway. My other choices
are the free ones; Avast, AVG, AntiVir. I use WinXP PRO.

Yes, it is probably the best. But the point is I don't want to pay for it
when there are good freeware ones available. My question is Symantec
Corporate Edition 9.0 or the free ones?

Install the trial NOD32 with your system clock turned forward to 2099.
Once it's installed, reset the system clock and restart. You'll have a
few hundred thousand trial days then.

Change the update server to http://www.nod32.com/nod_eval/

DEAR WATTSVILLE, JUDGE, Others:

Tried to follow Wattsville's advice re clock set to 2099 and tried to
change Server as you suggested AFTER successfully Installing NOD32
(free).

Problem 1: When I try to do a simple "Update" I keep getting a "SERVER
CONNECTION FAILED" Error. Have tried this 5X over a 3 hour span. Why
can't I connect with the server (http://www.nod32.com) for a simple
(but crucial) update?

Problem 2: I tried to "add" the server you suggested
(www.nod32.com/nod_eval) but the Program keeps resetting me to the
default server (see above) which, as stated in Prob. 1, fails to
connect with me for updates.

I want to try this AV but I cannot even get it to do an update. Thanks
for any help.

The NOD32 update servers seem to have very limited bandwidth - I often
get the server connection failure message when running a manual update.
Best thing to do is let it update automatically. The server - make
sure you don't have "Choose automatically" selected.

Also, use the Schedule/Planner function to create a search for updates
at, say, 1200 every day, and click the run as soon as possible option at
whatever screen it's on.

Try that and see how you get on.

If you have a PC with enough resources left,... get Norton.

The Corporate version of Symantec doesn't use system resources like the
retial versions.

I too was 'offered' (told basically) to use Copr v9 for working from home.
Having used the retail version of Symantec, I was surprised how few system
resources Corp v9 uses.

I even play FS2004 with it enabled - no slowdown

Don't use Norton, it's crap. I used to love it, though.
