when pasting workbook to workbook content truncated to 255 char

I am coping cells from one workbook to another workbook and when I paste the
content it is truncated to 255 charters. It does work correctly in the same
worksheet and worksheet to worksheet but from one file to an other, each
cells content is shortened to 255 charters. any ideas

In some old versions of Excel (95) strings were limited to 255 characters in
length and in a few places the string-handling of current versions still
relies on some deeply burried piece of string handling. This is clearly a
bug (rather than an homage to earlier versions) but has been around for a
while, so may continue to be a problem for a while yet.

Workarounds are messy but easy to get in principle: VB routines that iterate
through and use VB string handling to clone one workbook's cells to another,
for example.

If you have 1 instance of Excel and 2 files open then copying a cell with
more than 255 chars seems to work ok. However, if you have 2 instances of
excel, and you copy a cell with more than 255 chars from one instance of
excel to the other instance, then the content of the cell is cropped to 255
chars. If you copy the content from the formula bar and paste into the
formula bar in the other instance, it is not cropped.

Hope this clarifies the issue a little.

Alex Hammond.
