What happened to my document when files were transferred to my XP

I had a Win98SE computer and had files transferred from there to my new E510
Dell Dimension Windows XP.

One file folder had a group of files with some rather long names and
everything transferred except something at the very end of the path.

In the folder that includes the documents I am talking about, there were 2
Word documents . One was a read me that I wrote myself about the 2nd
document and I could open it and read it. It shows up as ~README~1Microsoft
Word Document , but when I read it then closed it, it created another
document titled ~$ADME~1 Microsoft Word Document 1KB. If I try to open this
document, I get messages saying the software needed to read this document is
not on the system - need CD to install it. I did not install it. When I
went back to this folder that document was gone.

The 2nd document, the one that is blank and says TTLCTA~1 19 KB Microsoft Word
Document opens up blank except for a page break. This was a long Family Tree.

I was told by Installs, Inc when they transferred my files something to the
effect that the path was too long and if I renamed it I should be able to
open it. This did not work.

I was told by Dell software support that it probably got damaged during the
transfer.

Whata do you think happened? I now realize the TTLCTA stands for To The
L...Children - These Are Your Family Trees (The name I had originally given
the document) When does Windows use this key: ~ and when does Windows use
this key $ as used in the name ~$ADME~1

Thanks

Hi Joni:

I hope the file is not lost. Try this:

Start - Search - All files and folders.

Do NOT type anything in the "All or part of a file name"

In the "A word or phrase in the file", type a word or phrase that you can
remember with certainty is in the text of the file and is unique to that text
(an unusual family name perhaps like Uncle Redcabbage?)

Go to "more Advanced Options". Make sure that the following are checked:
Search Hidden files and folders
Search System folders
Search sub-folders

Click Search. This search may take a long time depending on your computer
speed and amount of data.

If any files are found, try right-clicking and select "open With", then
choose Notepad. Let us know if that works. If not we could try something
else.

I followed your instructions. The items in the document were not unique;
however I did manage to find the correct document and open it in Notepad -
rather jumbled. I then opened it with Wordpag and there it was. I copied it
into a new Word document and placed it in the correct location but I had to
shorten the name a little in order for it to be found there. I left the
original ~TTLCTA~1 blank document but I suppose I could have pasted there as
well then changed the name to a shortened version

Thanks for your help

I find the MS forum very difficult to work with. Continuously have to
rearrange things to see everything. I am told it is better to use a
newsreader. When I went to my Outlook Express and tried to set it up., I
entered my name as Joni and my e-mail address with (removethis)and then the
rest of my isp address. IIt is my understanding these helps in getting less
spam. Then the Internet Connection Wizared your internet servicwe provider
has given you.

Below the box for typing it saysIf your internet service provider has
informedyou that you must log on to your news (NNTP) and has provided you
with an NNTP account name and passwordthen select the check box below

that box saysMy news server requires me to log on.

I called Verizon because I have Verizon with MSN premium but they said
something to the effect that they do not provide it. Note my MSN address is
a hotmail address because originally I had an address (I still have) and a
hotmail address so they had me keep @hotmail.com rather than @msn.com. Can
you offer me any assistance p er this matter?

popped up and wanted me to type the name of my internet news (NNTP) server

In Outlook Express go to Tools | Accounts | Add (or New) | News.
Set up an account for this news server:

msnews.microsoft.com

The server is free and does not require you to logon. This news server
carries over 2200 newsgroups related to Microsoft products and keeps
messages at least 30 days.

Sorry to break into post, but you were a big help and now I have another
question but no amount of trying will open the new post. This question is re
Word 2000. I had Works 2000 with Word 2000 on my Win.XPSE but AI had to
install it myself on my new XP. I only installed Word and Word Add-Ins.
When I had Word 2000 on the old system, I was always getting messages about
the normal.dot template - changes have been make - changes have been made to
the global template - doc. is read only. I was to to always say yes to these
messages, but nothing seems to work right even when I say no or cancel, I
kept getting messages whether I say yes or no or cancel and the normal.dot
template comes up and I have to shutdown my computer to get out of this.
Someone fixed this so I did not get these messages on my old computer, but
now I am getting them on my new computer. I had my software support delete
and recreate normal.dot but I am getting these messages again. They often
say in use by another application. I think I'll never understand this. How
can I get rid of these messages, what should I do when I get them.
