| When you boot the box from the setup CD with the intention
| of running a 'Repair' . After setup loads files ...3 selections
| appear
| - setup 2000
| - repair 2000
| - quit setup
|
| Choosing the 'repair 2000 ' option here is what i would term
| the - '1st repair option' - But -
| If you choose 'setup 2000' ..accept the EULA..then you are
| led to a screen where the options are
|
| - Repair the selected Win 2000 installation
| - Continue installing a fresh copy of Win2000 without repairing
|
| So - there seem to be 2 different ways to run the Repair
| process - and the repair process followed seems quite
| different - depending on whether you choose the first 'Repair'
| option offered after booting from the Setup CD - Or - you
| ignore that first offer and choose 'Continue' and then accept
| the 2nd offer to 'Repair'
|
| If you choose the first repair option you will NOT be asked
| for the Emergency Repair Disk and the Process seems to
| be much LONGER . more seems to be being done.
|
| If you choose the 2nd repair option - you are asked for the
| Emergency Repair Disk - and the repair process continues
| on - offering options like 'manual' or 'fast repair' - AND
| appears to be a much Quicker and 'lighter' process.
|
| What is going on ? Is the 1st Repair a more thorough repair
| Is the first repair checking more files ? or what ?
|
| Thanks for any info or any suggestions where the answer may
| be found .

The first repair option asking for the ERD offers two options - manual and fast. It
will try to repair certain parts of the sam/registry from the \winnt\repair folder
among other things and is the first resort repair to try to get an OS that may not
boot into the OS or allow logon. The repair option after the EULA is a last resort
full repair installation [in place upgrade installation] that will try to restore
your operating system and leave your data and applications intact though require you
to reinstall first your service pack and then critical updates. That option takes as
long as a full install. See links below for more info. --- Steve

Thank you, that was an especially succinct and thorough reply with very good
references.
You must work in the IT industry . Thanks for the help - i am currently
doing an 'indepth'
learning on my own. I notice you reply a lot and your answers are very good.
How long
have you been doing this ? Are you getting burnt out ? Could you stick
around a little longer
until my learning is done :) ? Robert

Glad to help. No I am not in the IT industry. I am going to be retiring from full
time work soon [age 52] and would like to work in it part time for fun and to keep
busy. I don't know if there are many part time job opportunities. I did get my A+ and
MCSE in Windows NT4.0 and 2000 a couple years ago and like to participate in some of
the newsgroups to keep up with things and help out where I can. Good luck with your
studies. --- Steve
