western digital hard drive

i have a western digital caviar hard drive on my computer. sometimes
it will make this god awful racket and then it will stop. its like an
on and off think. i was wondering whatis causing the problem and how i
fix it.

Depends on what sort of 'racket' it makes.

If its the bearing, its the bad bearing that is producing the noise
and you can safely ignore it and just change your underwear.
That generally sounds like a whine/howl etc without any real
repetitive pattern to it.

If its got any sort of pattern to it its likely the drive recalibrating
and that is likely evidence that the drive is dying.

Post the SMART data using Everest, that may well allow
us to see which of those two it is. The bearing going bad
doesnt produce anything bad in the SMART data.

I replaced a WD 80Gb a couple of months ago was only about four years
old. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it was slow and sometimes it
clanged as though it was trash collection day..!

I just had to replace it and the best option I has was a Seagate...
thank heavens I can take mi ear plugs out..!

Tell ya what... clobbing em with a lump hammer just don't work, nearly
did mi' self an injury - the hammer just bounced... lol..

One of these day's I'll be one of them 'wise guy's' and get a spare
one in a caddy, as you probably know it's eesy peesy formatting but
getting all the programmes back....arghhh...!

....and I thought they were the bee knee's, maybe one day it'll all be
on a chip.

WOW. well since the thing is completely empty, cuz i quit using that
drive for a while, i guess replacing will be a snap. ive heard a lot
of positive feedback about seagate drives, so i guess ill replace it
with one.

is there any way to have the bearings in the motor on it replaced?

The sides and battom are indestructable, you gotta hit the top to even
dent it. But that does very little actual damage to the platters.
