Western Digital 20 gig won't write zeros

Western Digital hard drives comes with a diagnostic disk. One test
allows you to write zeros to HD. One write zero test is called Quick
and the other Full. I've tried both of these, but it would NOT write
any zeros onto my WD 20 gig 7600 rpm HD. With the Quick Erase test, I
got a message saying, "IRQ timeout; Error/ Status code: 0112. Is my
hard drive bad, because zeros can't be written to it?
I hestitate to mention this ( it might effect the answer you would
have given), but Windows won't boot properly. It only goes as far as
the Windows full screen, then I get an Illegal Operation message,
MSGSRV32.exe caused a general protection fault.
Any help in solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Well, something in the hard drive subsystem is bad, anyway.

It could be the controller, the power supply or even the ribbon cable too.

The quick check is to try that test on that drive in a
completely different system to see if its the drive or not.

Its important information.

It may well be that the system has a serious
problem and it isnt just the hard drive.

Try the drive in a completely different
system to see if the drive is bad or not.
