does not kill HDDs, it just produces bad sectors on write.

This is possibly indirect damage: Computers banging against walls
and table-legs and falling over or things falling on them. It could
also just be a shameless advertising lie. Also 1-in-4 computers to
come into a repair shop to have HDD damage does not sound unusual
at all.
