Want to remove items from taskbar tray at start

I have a new GatewayAMD Athlon system and it came with certain items already
in the tray which I don't use and have to manually exit every morning. I know
that with XP I can't just go into msconfig to remove these items at startup
the way I could with '98. How can I get them to not load when the computer is
turned on?
I know that there should be a place where I can instruct each program to not
load at start up but since I didn't originally load these programs (bigfix,
Realplayer and quicktime are two of them) I could not give the instruction to
not place in tray at start up. Instructions would be much appreciated.

I recommend you uninstall any programs you don't want (through
add/remove programs)

Sometimes you can right click an item in task tray, select options or
preferences and tell it not to automatically start with windows.

If the above fail, try Start | Run | msconfig , startup tab and uncheck
items you don't want starting.

Yes you can. It works exactly the same way. However, before doing so read my
standard advice on this subject, below:

First, note that you should be concerned with *all* programs that start
automatically, not just with those that go into the tray. Not all
autostarting programs manifest themselves by an icon in the tray.

On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its Options to
see if it has the choice not to start (make sure you actually choose the
option not to run it, not just a "don't show icon" option). Many can easily
and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG from the
Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the programs you don't
want to start automatically.

However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose of running
the minimum number of programs. Despite what many people tell you, you
should be concerned, not with how *many* of these programs you run, but
*which*. Some of them can hurt performance severely, but others have no
effect on performance.

Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you should do is
determine what each program is, what its value is to you, and what the cost
in performance is of its running all the time. You can get more information
about these at http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html. If you can't find it
there, try google searches and ask about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent informed
decision about what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of.

Most program's user interface will leave the option to not load on startup.
If you don't need the programs, uninstall them. For programs such as
QuickTime, you may edit the settings through the QuickTime applet in Control
Panel. In the alternative, why not use MSCONFIG? You can use that with XP.

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

Visit http://www.mlin.net and get a program called startup. Install and you
shall find it in the Start/Settings/Control Panel.
It contains a listing of all programs started when computer is switched on or
re-started. Look through the list and disable the ones you suspect.
Make sure you have a listing of what you have done and also the date and time of
such deed so you can go back again and enable the program later.

Ken... thank you for your reply. How can I tell what all the items in
Startup are and whether they are necessary or need to be running in
the background during the time I have the computer on?

You're welcome. If you look back at the part of my message you snipped
below, you will see that I gave you several suggestions on how to find out
what these are.

I looked at
the list in MSCONFIG and it is rather lengthy. While I know that
there is a great deal more needed to run XP, I don't know what is and
what isn't necessary at all times.

No, *nothing* is this list is needed to run Windows XP. The only issue is
what *you* want running. Certainly you should want your security-oriented
software to be running, but beyond that, everything else is up to you.
