W2K Pro - Trying to install SP4 - System Freezes - must hard boot

I have a P4 1.4 MHZ, 256MB, 60G HD. Clean install of W2K Pro 2 yrs ago. Have installed SP3. Have IE6.
Have Scanner, Webcam, USB bus, and Smartreader attached. All seem to be working fine.
Running McAfee, and ZoneAlarm.
Get frequent errors with "Explorer has caused a protection error.... etc." when running Explorer.
I can live with this, but it's not a lot of fun.
The "accepted" fix is to uninstall IE6, and revert back to previous version. This is STUPID.

But, I am now trying to install SP4. When I start it up, my computer goes into a "freeze"... the mouse and everything else goes really slow.
When I invoke Task Manager, it shows this install program running at 99%. (that explains why everything else is slow)
If I cancel the install, it still shows up in Task manager.
If I shutdown the install from Task manager, it says it does it... but it doesn't... it still shows up. Then if I try to shut it down again, it says it cannot do this.

My only recourse is to hard boot... I can't even shut the computer off via the Start menu.

I have actually experienced this same situation with a couple of other pieces of software, and the same scenario recurs.
I have to hard boot to get out of it.

I think some routine is being invoked (possibly incorrectly, or ??) by these programs, and just gets into a never-ending loop.

Any thoughts or suggestions which work would surely be appreciated.

Not exactly.
If you have SP1
There is no uninstall/repair.
try installing it over the top -- TWICE
This should take care of the updates problem.

No guarantees

I have SP3. Installed it some time ago.
Re-installed it... no difference.

1. Should I re-install 2K (clean install)?
2. What if I move to WinXP ?

This is really annoying.

Sorry, I thought you understood it is I.E.6 Service Pack 1 I asked you about.
If you do not have it, You have an uninstall feature.
The best thing to do is unistall it.
then install it once again, with Service Pack 1

Don,
First, thanks for your replies.
Second.... I am a little confused....
You say to uninstall IE6 (revert back to previous version of IE), then
re-install IE6, and then install SP1 for IE6?
I already have IR6 with SP3 installed.
So.....
I don't understand how re-installng IE6 with SP1 could address/fix my
problem with my computer freezing up when I try to run/install SP4 for
Win2KPRo. Actually the freeze means that the update.exe is doing a run-away,
and gobbling all my cpu. And it just continues to do that, but doesn't
actually do any work. I have to do a hard boot to recover.

I also have this other problem with respect to winexplorer abending
frequently.
I know of a "fix" which is to revert back to previous version of IE from
IE6.

So, which problem are you trying to help me out with here?

If it is #2, fine, I can work with that.

If it is #1.... wow, that seems to be a wierd solution.

Thanks for your responses.
