VPN/Netgear new XP clients can't/2000 can on 2K server

  1. Here's a re-cap of how our two campuses are currently
networked, and then a description of the XP machines'
    problem.

Both campuses have cable Internet access and have Netgear
firewalls attached directly to the [cable] modems. The
firewalls' VPN feature is being used so that the one
campus (high school) can log on to our "XYZ" domain on the
Win 2000 server at the other campus (Elementary School).
Since we do not yet have the server at the HIgh School set
up, computers cannot print unless they are on the "XYZ"
domain. There is no problem with the Win 2000 and Win
98 computers at Pleasantview connecting to the domain over
the VPN. The problem is with the new Win XP Professional
    machines.

When I try to change the network connection to the XYZ
domain, the computer asks for the administrator name and
password as usual. But when I hit enter, the usual error
message is "the specified server cannot perform the
    designated operation."

When I look at the computers listed on the server,
however, there is a profile for the XP computer but it is
disabled. I enabled the new computer, but the computer
itself still won't connect to the domain. I created
profiles for all computers on the server, but that does
    not work either.

The wierd thing is that one of the XP machines connected
to the domain somehow and is working fine (we do not know
why or what we did). A couple other XP machines have
suddenly allowed a particular user to log on to the
XYZ domain (but no other users) but they cannot install
    printers.
