VPN Error 800 and Error 609 - No PPTP Available

D

Daniel

I have Windows XP Pro, all patches applied.

I have had VPN (PPTP) configured and running for over a year. Recently my
hard drive started making strange noises and I thought it might fail. So,
I did my usual MS Backup to my secondary hard drive, replaced the primary
hard drive, reinstalled Windows XP and then Restored my original drive back
using MS Backup's Restore. Aside from a few driver glitches that were
resolved by reinstalling the motherboard's supplied drivers, everything is
okay with the exception of my VPN connection.

I have deleted the VPN connection as well as the entire network card and
reinstalled and recreated each. However, I still get ERROR 800. I noticed
that when I create a new VPN connection it ALWAYS shows the icon as WAN
Miniport (L2PT). Problem is I need PPTP. If I go to the configuration of
the VPN connection (properties) after making it, and select PPTP VPN, it
errors out with a code 609 device does not exist.

It is as though PPTP is no longer available on my Windows XP box. Any
ideas? Where did it go? How do I get it back??

I even tried reinstalling Windows XP using the Repair option and re-
applying the latest service packs. But, still, no PPTP. Only L2TP which
my company does not use. :-(

Thanks,
Dan

you may have a WAN miniport issue. go to system properties>hardware>device
manager>view, select show hidden devices. check any red x on the WAN
miniport. you check the similar case on
