Volume control has a mind of its own?

I have XP home edition and use Winamp to listen to music. When I play mp3s the wave volume control slider moves up - on it's own - not sure why or how. All I know is I'm listening to music, and all of a sudden it's filled with pops and crackles, I adjust the wave volume slider down and everything is fine for a while, then, inexplicibly, it all happens again. Please don't say I need to use windows media player - it's way to confusing for me!
Thank you in advance for any help you can give

Check the volume controls for every installed player on the system and
include the windows volume controls in Control Panel/Sounds and Audio
Devices. Some of these settings may be overriding the Winamp setting.
