Windows Vista Ultimate and nothing further. I am trying to update from this
link and just want to make sure I choose the right one of the two downloads.
Under system type it does say 32 bit operating system, but there again the
recommended download options offer only the 64 or 86. Not sure which to
choose.

86 bit? No such thing. I think you are referring to "Vista x86 and x64 based
versions" language on the relevant Microsoft download page. x86 would refer
to the 32-bit update. X86 doesn't mean 86 bit as i understand it.
1. Hold down the Windows key, and press Pause/Break. It will answer
your question under "System Type."
2. There is no such thing as an 86-bit version. The choices are 32-bit
(by far the most common) and 64-bit.
3. If you don't already know the answer, almost certainly your are
running the 32-bit version. Almost nobody is running the 64-bit
version unless he's made an active choice to do so.
